Spirits Tasting: American Whiskey
Thursday, June 30, 2016 / 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
This Thursday, we're pouring a trio of American whiskies for you to taste and take home to toast the Republic. Whiskey has been distilled in North America for longer than the United States has been a country, and it played an important formative role in the early Republic, when farmers in Western Pennsylvania rebelled against the Whiskey Tax in July of 1794. The rebels lost, but they kept making whiskey, and despite some hiccups along the way, whiskey distilling is thriving today. This tasting is free. Check out the full schedule of Independence Day events here.
One Eight Distilling Rock Creek White Whiskey: One of DC's newest distilleries, One Eight is producing a white whiskey while waiting for their brown spirits to age in the barrel. The closest thing to the fine old American moonshine tradition you can get without breaking the law, this un-aged whiskey is made from 100% locally-sourced rye. It is a flavorful, Pennsylvania-style whiskey that bursts with bold, peppery notes. Bottled at 99 proof, this whiskey has the chops to shine through in any cocktail and is a must-have for the serious home bartender.
Catoctin Creek Organic Roundstone Rye: Rye whiskey is an old mid-Atlantic tradition (especially in Maryland, although this one hails from Virginia). Another locally-made spirit, Roundstone Rye is made from 100% rye, aged for 2 years in American white oak casks. This award-winning whiskey is one of the few organic whiskeys in the world and has notes of caramel and butter toffee, with just a hint of lemon on the nose. Delicious mixed, on the rocks, or neat.
Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon: Four Roses Yellow Label is one of the best entry level bourbons available, and the Four Roses Small Batch is even better. A blend of four limited-quantity bourbon recipes, this multiple-award-winning bourbon has a nose of spice and dried fruit with a hint of caramel. On the palate, it is full-bodied and balanced with a hint of sweetness giving way to a long, lingering finish. An excellent sipping whiskey.
