It's hot! So we chose to stay inside and watch movies. We took inspiration from a few classic movies to select our wines for tonight's tasting, that includes a Grillo for the Sicilian, a Chianti for Hannibal Lecter, and a rare treat of an expensive, older wine for Maggie.
The Muppet Movie
Kermit: “Waiter, the wine please.”
Miss Piggy: “You mad, impetuous thing, it’s Champagne!”
Snooty somm : “Not exactly. Sparkling Moscatel, one of the finest wines from Idaho! Would you care to smell the bottlecap?”
nv Lake Chalice Sauvignon Blanc Cracklin' Savie (New Zealand / Marlborough) $18.99 – All about the purity of NZ Sauvignon Blanc. Pale straw with green hues, and some little fine bubbles. Intense aromas of passionfruit and blackcurrant. On the palate it's a crisp, medium bodied, wine bursting with classical varietal flavors of passionfruit, blackcurrant, and gooseberry, with a hint of sparkle.
Steve Martin: “Yes, but no more 1966. Let’s splurge! Bring us some fresh wine, the freshest you’ve got. This year’s! No more of this old stuff. He doesn’t realize he’s dealing with sophisticated people here.”
2016 Grand Louis Vin de Bordeaux Blanc (France / Bordeaux) $10.99 – This wine has straw hues with just a hint of pale gold, the nose is brimming with notes of grapefruit, white flowers, and just a hint of oranges. The freshness of this wine hits your palate from the very first sip; the flavors are nicely balanced between the refreshing grapefruit notes to the zippy acidity and a lengthy finish.
The Princess Bride
Dread Pirate Roberts: “You guessed wrong.”
Vizzini: “You only think I guessed wrong! That’s what’s so funny! I switched glasses…. Never go against a Sicilian when death is on the line! Ha ha ha.”(falls over dead.)
2015 Alcesti Grillo Sicilia (Italy / Sicily) $10.99 – Grillo is the indigenous white grape of Sicily. Sicily is still emerging from the dark ages of bad winemaking. But when it's good, it's really quite good. With its shimmering, yellow straw hue and lively, lemon scents, it is an easy pairing for any shellfish, white fish, or lean, white meat dishes. Perfect with a plate of paella too. A very cool wine with a palate that expresses fresh, citrus fruit coupled with a medium-full bodied intensity.
Silence of the Lambs
Hannibal Lecter: “A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.”
2013 Cennatoio Chianti Classico (Italy / Tuscany / Chianti Classico) $24.99 – A delicious wine with a very clean entry to the palate. The wine makes its mark thanks to shapely aromas of dark fruit, dried cherry, and plum. The quality of the fruit is evident in the classic 2013 vintage. Clean acidity and bright berry flavors move towards the palate where they are both refreshing and invigorating.
Jack: “If they want to drink Merlot, we're drinking Merlot.”
Miles Raymond: “No, if anyone orders Merlot, I'm leaving. I am NOT drinking any fucking Merlot!”
2013 Silver Palm Merlot (California / North Coast) $16.99 – This wine is inky dark in color, potent in flavor and huge in structure. The aromas are like smoke, dried herbs, and blackberry, the flavors are concentrated in black currant, while the texture is saturated with fine tannins that make it almost chewy. This is full bodied, dry, and needs either time to mellow out or some juicy steak alongside.
Year of the Comet
Maggie: But it could be vinegar! I mean, old wine often turns to vinegar.
Oliver: Well then, we either have a wonderful glass of wine, or a really expensive salad
2005 Pelissero Langhe Long Now (Italy / Piedmont / Langhe) $74.99 – Possesses awesome richness, nuance and detail. A blend of Nebbiolo and Barbera, it sweeps across the palate with tons of dense, layered fruit. The wine’s considerable richness covers the tannins nicely, but there is plenty of structure underneath. This is a gem from Giorgio Pelissero.
